"And
He spoke a parable to them, The ground
of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
And he thought within himself, saying, What
shall I do, because I have no room where
to bestow my fruits?
And he said, This will I do: I will pull
down my barns, and build greater; and there
will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou has
much goods laid up for many years; take thine
ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night
thy soul shall be required of thee; then
whose shall those things be, which thou has
provided?
So is he that layeth up treasure for himself,
and is not rich toward God."

The
Death of a Shopping Center?
Tuesday,
2 August 2005 With
the closing of the doors of Winn Dixie this
week, the shopping center will be all but
dead. I'm sure those inhabitants who remain
would appreciate a little face-lift of the
shadows of the signs of times past.
I
took my son yesterday to Winn Dixie for
some supper fixins' and was quite astounded to
see a more or less dead area of town that not
too many years ago was just opening their doors
for a grand opening everyone in town was excited
about. We had some new stores coming to Cullman
with new selections and service. Now, these stores
have abandoned their well established location
for one nearer to the Wal-Mart Supercenter. Much
like buzzards hovering over the fresh kill waiting
for leftovers.
What
type of cancer is exhibited here with lessons
provided many times in the years previous but
left unlearned. Someone else will pay for this,
perhaps our children. I hope my son took in the
depth of the problem our city has exhibited with
little concern for anything more than the taxes
the new shopping center will generate. What incentive
is provided here to open the locked doors of
this dying series of shops on one of the state's
few North/South corridors?

The same place Sally's and the other stores
have disappeared.
